2023 USSF Strict Curl Exhibition

Competition brings out the best in us and what’s more fun than playing with around with a new movement! The United States Strengthlifting Federation would like to invite you to join your community in a Strict Curl Exhibition

From August 7th to August 13th, athletes from around the world will submit their best Strict Curl for bragging rights and a chance to win Trophies, Achievements, and Prizes!

THE RULES

The Strict CurlTechnical Rules

  1. The lifter must assume a motionless position with the bar held horizontally across the thighs with supinated hands, with the head, shoulders, and buttocks against a wall, and feet flat on the floor with heels no further than 12″ from the wall.
  2. In one continuous upward motion the lifter brings the bar to a fully curled position with elbows in full flexion and the bar touching or near the chin or throat.
  3. The head, shoulders, and buttocks must remain against the wall the entire time.
  4. The legs and hips may not be used in any way to complete the lift.
  5. After demonstrating control at the lockout, the bar is then returned to the fully extended position.
  6. Use of a standard barbell, ez-curl bar, or bar weighing less then 45lbs is allowed.
  7. Up to 7mm neoprene elbow sleeves are allowed.
  8. Wrist wraps are allowed.

Reasons for Disqualification

  1. Failure to assume a start position with the bar motionless across the thighs.
  2. After the upward initiation, any downward motion of the center of the bar that occurs prior to lockout, as measured between the hands.
  3. Any use of the knees or hips to assist in moving the bar.
  4. Bouncing the bar off the thighs or bending the back to assist in moving the bar.
  5. Any forward, backward or lateral step during the curl itself.

The Basics

  1. Competition takes place between lifters in categories defined by sex, bodyweight, and age. There are fourteen classes:
  • Open Division
    • Lightweight: Up to 175lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Middleweight: Up to 225lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Heavyweight: Over 231lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Junior: Under 20 years old

  • Women’s Division
    • Lightweight: Up to 140lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Middleweight: Up to 180lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Heavyweight: Over 180lbs
      • Adult: 20-39 years old
      • Master: Over 40 years old
    • Junior: Under 20 years old

2. Determining Winners:

  • Winners of the adult divisions will be given to the lifter with heaviest Strict Curl.
  • Best Lifter awards will be given to the lifter with the best performance based upon Wilk’s Coefficient.
  • Winners of the Master divisions will be based upon heaviest lift adjusted by the McCulloch Formula for age.
  • Winners of the Junior divisions will be based upon heaviest lift adjusted by Foster’s Coefficient for age.

3. Video Submission

  • Lifters are allowed to submit up to three attempts for each lift.
  • Lifts must be submitted within the dates set by the competition.
  • Lifts must be submitted within 48 hours of the attempt itself.
  • A lifter’s entire body must be visible throughout the lift from beginning to end.
  • Immediately after a lifter successfully completes an attempt, the lifter must visually identify the weight on the bar in one continuous recording.
  •  At some point during the video the lifter or coach must display the event’s unique codeword.
  • The quality of the video, use of safety measures, and costume must allow for proper evaluation of the lift.

4. All lifts will be judged by a USSF official for compliance with their respective ruleset. Lifts that clearly meet or do not meet the standard will be evaluated by a single official. Challenging or questionable lifts will be evaluated by a three-judge panel with judgement decided by majority ruling.

5. Lifting Costume

  • The lifting costume should be sufficiently contrasting and tight as to allow proper evaluation of the lift. Singlets are not required.
  • The lifting costume must not be supportive in nature.
  • Belts are allowed on all lifts and can be made of any material provided it does not exceed 4” along its width at any point.
  • Rubberized knee sleeves not exceeding 30cm in length or 7mm thickness are allowed. Knee sleeves must be non-fastening and non-adjustable.
  • Wrist wraps not to exceed 1m in length are allowed.
  • Rubberized elbow sleeves not exceeding 30cm in length and 7mm in thickness are allowed. Elbow sleeves must be non fastening and non-adjustable. *New
  • Shoes are not required for online competitions. *New

  • Every lifter will receive a Digital Trophy for participating in this competition and many more unique Digital Trophies and Achievements are up for grabs!
